Instructional Methods

Objective: Develop educational programs and materials with appropriate scope, sequence, and the focus for learners through the application of evidence-based strategies and methodologies.

Artifact 1: Curriculum Outline from Foundations of Health Professions Education Course (HPTT 601)

My Curriculum Outline for a Radiation Therapy Principles for Pediatric Patients course creates an overall plan of attack for the structure of an educational course.  A curriculum outline is the overall design of a course by explaining why the course is needed, which learning objectives will be met, how students will be assessed, and the various teaching strategies used by the instructor. Without the basic structure and flow of the curriculum planned out, essential components could be missed, and learning objectives might not be fulfilled. There is not usually a specific course dedicated to radiation safety for pediatric oncology patients in school and this assignment ultimately helped me take on the daunting task of mapping out what I wanted students to take away from the course and how I was going to help make it happen through the use of evidence-based practice and methodologies.

Artifact 2: Exam Blueprint from Evaluation and Assessment of Teaching and Learning in Health Professions Education (HPTT 605)

An exam blueprint is another example of creating the framework for educational curriculum but is more geared towards describing a specific unit exam.  I created a Final Exam Blueprint for an Introduction to Radiation Physics course. The purpose and scope of this is to make sure that all appropriate content areas are being tested over, as well as how many and what kind of questions to expect on the exam. I enjoy being organized and I think that the blueprint I created in an outline format lays everything out there for the exam. It also made me realize that they are informative to both instructors and students alike. It helps instructors make sure that questions represent the topics based on the determined percentages/points and can help when writing exam questions. Blueprints also highlight which topic areas students should put more focus on while studying so exam questions shouldn’t come as a surprise.
