Learner Assessment

Objective: Create engaging learning solutions to improve health professions education.

Artifact 21: Solutions for Using Simulation as Assessment in Radiation Therapy Education Final Project from Evaluation and Assessment of Teaching and Learning in Health Professions Education (HPTT 605)

The use of simulation as a form of assessment in radiation therapy education has the potential to help students acquire new skills and improve upon new competencies even before working with real patients at clinical sites. This assignment prompted me to think how to better utilize the simulation tools that University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) students already have access to and figure out how to add it into current curriculum. The Virtual Environment Radiotherapy Training (VERT) system and virtual cadaver Anatomage table are two simulation tools used by students already. Taking it another step further, this paper focuses on assessing students through the use of simulation into the curriculum while also integrating a competency-based grading system, improving current evaluation rubrics, and creating more opportunities for instructor-student feedback. This assignment helped me not only think outside of the box of incorporating new simulation technology into the curriculum, but also how I was going to evaluate students to prove that the addition of simulation was valuable to students’ education and not just a shiny, new toy.

Artifact 22: Breast Cancer Radiation Therapy Side Effects Venngage Infographic from Multimedia and Emerging Technologies for Learning in the Health Professions Course (HPTT 604)

With breast cancer being the most common type of cancer in women, we have high volumes of breast cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy treatments at our clinic.  Often times, so much information is given to patients at time of their consult that they either forget or were not informed at all about some skin care guidelines while they are under going radiation treatment. After answering a lot of these same questions lately at work, I decided to make an infographic using the Venngage tool that I learned about in the HPTT 604 course. The infographic I created is more visually pleasing than quickly writing down a note on a sticky note for the patient and combines the most common FAQ’s and tips and tricks all into one convenient document.
