Leadership in Health Professions Education

Objective: Apply knowledge of the administrative aspects of leading educational programs for health professions.

Artifact 15: Project Vision for Revamping Patient Education in Radiation Oncology from Leadership in Health Professions Education Course (HPTT 623)

Artifact 16: Leadership Plan & Strategy for Revamping Patient Education in Radiation Oncology from Leadership in Health Professions Education Course (HPTT 623)

Both of the artifacts that meet this objective are from a semester-long leadership project to update patient education for radiation treatments at the cancer center that I work at. While creating an overall vision for this project, I kept in mind the thought of “treating each patient like they were your grandparent,” which is something I learned in school and then truly understood when I treated my own grandpa for his cancer. The overall purpose of my project is to reduce patient anxiety and stress on staff by updating patient education documents and better explaining and communicating to our radiation oncology patients the full radiation process from start to finish. The vision aspect of this project introduced the topic to colleagues and addressed how it was beneficial to both patient and staff and allowed opportunities for staff feedback and suggestions. Then this plan was broken down more strategically and outlined what tasks needed to be done, how we planned to complete them, and set deadlines, while also offering coaching and motivation. This entire project was one of my favorites in the program as it allowed me to find creative solutions to a real work problem. It also encouraged me to look at myself as a leader when I initially hadn’t thought of myself as one. I was able to better pinpoint my strengths to capitalize on, while also acknowledging my weaknesses to better recognize when to delegate tasks and ask for help in the future.
