Research
Objective: Develop research skills and engage in scholarship activities in an effort to advance understanding and practice of education in the health professions.
Artifact 9: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Modules from Research Analysis & Design for Healthcare Education (HPTT 830)
In an effort to develop and advance my research skills, I completed 21 modules to learn more about compliance and ethics in research. This module training course advanced my understanding of such topics as human subjects as research, obtaining appropriate informed consent, and keeping medical device regulations in mind in my future research studies. These modules also detail the importance of performing research on credible participants, without exploiting special populations or misusing research data. As medical technology and protocols evolve in the clinical setting, so must the curriculum in higher medical education courses. This training will benefit any future research that I may perform on students, patients, and the general population in order to advance knowledge and better our practices in the field of radiation sciences.
Artifact 10: Case Based Learning in Combination with Virtual Reality: A Flipped Classroom Approach to Radiation Therapy Education Concept Map and Literature Review Draft from Research Analysis & Design for Healthcare Education (HPTT 830)
Traditional classrooms are becoming outdated as advancements in technology and virtual reality have created a shift in instructional approaches from passive lectures towards more active participation in medical education. To keep the attention of students in hopes of better knowledge retention, it has become more important to “speak the language of today’s student through the use of technology” in higher education. There are limited studies on the flipped classroom (FC) and specifically radiation therapy but my research for this literature review helped me further work on my research skills to eventually write a research proposal on using the FC approach in radiation therapy education through case-based learning and virtual reality. My research also led me to dive deeper into collecting student data through qualitative interviews, focus groups, classroom observation, instructor/course surveys, pre- and post-activity quizzes, and self-evaluations using Likert-type scales that focus on task value, enjoyment, and anxiety. As I am newer to educational research, this process has overall prepared me to focus on creating or enhancing existing literature instead of simply duplicating past studies.
