Best Practices in Teaching
Objective: Demonstrate reflective practice through the integration of evidence-based knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards establishing effective learning environments.
Artifact 7: Article Critique answering the guiding question "How simulation is being used in inter-professional learning?" from Multimedia and Emerging Technologies for Learning in the Health Professions Course (HPTT 604)
To answer the guiding question for this assignment, I chose an article of a systematic review conducted to evaluate the effect of using interprofessional manikin-based simulation training for trauma resuscitations in adult emergency rooms. This type of training is often used to practice leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, as well as defining clear roles of each participant during the activity. There were some issues when trying to compare all of the studies in the review as not all interventions were the same or were not explained. However, final results showed that each type of manikin-based training saw an improvement in teamwork perception/attitude, knowledge/skills, and behavior immediately following the activity. Although this systematic study focused on professionals who work in trauma settings, I think that the positive results are encouraging enough to utilize manikin-based simulation training in other healthcare fields. By integrating the use of simulation into radiation science curriculum, this has potential to establish more effective learning environments for students outside of the traditional classroom setting that tends to not promote interactivity and communication skills.
Artifact 8: Discussion Board Assignment covering Vygotsky’s Theories of Learning & Constructivist Approaches in Online vs. Live Learning Environments from Foundations of Health Professions Education Course (HPTT 601)
This assignment allowed me to discuss with my classmates how certain aspects of Vgotsky’s theory and constructivist approaches are used in online and in-person learning environments. Vgotsky’s theory emphasizes that social interactions are important influences on learning and development, while constructivism involves “learners creating their own learning.” Most of the class discussion led to trying to create a more social atmosphere in online classrooms in the midst of transitioning away from traditional classroom settings. Fortunately, updates in technology and tools such as discussion boards, group chats, Zoom calls, and interactive platforms like Google Docs has helped bridge the physical distance between students. This assignment also gave me good ideas on how to utilize technology and supplemental videos, e-modules, etc. to individualize student learning and focused on the concept of a flipped classroom to allow students more opportunities to be in charge of their own learning.
